Godard Mon Amour (2017)
18 sep. 2024
gross attempt at revising what godard was. complete misunderstanding of how politics and
cinema are intertwined, why he chose that path, of godard's style - cheaply using some parts of his
cinematographic aesthetic techniques against him through the lens of irony. could this movie just be a show of
jealousy from hazanavicius? it reeks of professional insecurity and bad faith, or, in the best case scenario,
absolute ignorance.

God will forgive you of course, but you mustn’t forgive yourself. So live between forgiveness and your own torment.a self-imposed purgatory that questions whether you truly believe in the forgiveness you claim to receive. how can one’s faith be undivided if God’s absolution isn’t comforting? how can one’s faith be undivided if at the bottom of it lies nothing but fear? with this said, doesn't "faith" become a ritual of submission rather than liberation? the believer (willingly or not) mistakes the echo of their own fear for the voice of the divine, making faith function as an internalized warden: policing thought, dictating emotion and sanctifying the structures that oppress. essentially, religion anesthetizes. rublev ceases his activity after witnessing the horrors inflicted by the raid of oppressors in the name of dealing with his sin. after he decides to resume his occupation, it is less of an act of spiritual triumph than the resumption of the illusion.

to me, these short films resemble how Jung sees the house as an archetype for the psyche:
starting with the first of the four, the hallway. a hallway has no proper identity like the other rooms,
it’s rather just used as a way of connecting the rooms. in the film itself, garside crawls around it in a
cyclical motion, she moves but she gets nowhere (also shown by the looping video). in fact, this could be
interpreted as avoiding a deeper interaction with consciousness.
the second part of garside’s house shown is the bedroom. a classic symbol of intimacy. the stance she
appears in very well resembles taking off her social persona, revealing a more authentic self
moving to the window, this could be explained as exactly what it is: a window between the innards and
exterior of realms of the psyche. the cinematography in this short perhaps suggests an exchange of information
between the two?
the last area shown, the kitchen, a place for transformation and nourishment of the psyche. in this
short, she speaks to herself about indecision, about hesitation and waiting for “signs”. this is, for her, a
moment of self-reflection, the split between wanting change and actually doing it. this is also the only entry
of the four in which the viewer is an unwanted spectator rather than an expected observer.

like any American classic, this is, ideologically, an anti-communist Latino-fetishist
crime drama. the industry hungers for the "other" as raw material. it's exotic! however, the industry must
always emulate some other nationality. the accent sounds like an Italian gangster trying to speak Spanish. Al
Pacino is neither.
what is called a "crime drama" becomes in truth a parable about Hollywood itself. the industry traffics in the
same excess it condemns, commodifies what it fears, and turns social critique into a blockbuster. the
contradiction is not a flaw but a feature: America tells on itself most clearly in the stories it mass-produces.
the question is not why these films exist, but rather why we demand them. there's definitely a cultural hunger
satisfied by being able to look into a portal to a backwards society for three hours.
when i asked about it, a friend told me Scarface was a fun watch
and that was most definitely not a lie. i liked the cinematography, i liked the story and how quotable it is.

i absolutely loved the mid-way point. fantasy is almost always idealist, it constructs a
purified world: the Club Silencio scene functions as our moment of truth: it unmasks the previous scenes as
illusion. however, the revelation isn't that fantasy is false, but that it tries to persist in the face of the
real.
when confronted with reality (the play's performers' silence in this case), fantasy strives to reassert the
dream, with fleeting success, as the decoy trumpet player or the singer whose voice survives her collapse. this
was my favorite sequence, a dramatization of the inevitable failure of the ideal.

all of these events happening in the same apartment building (a beautiful one, too) really
adds to the atmosphere, even if the meta-connections were few.
i've thought of replacing Decalogue V and VI with A Short Film About Killing and A Short Film About Love, respectively.
ultimately i decided against it, having read that they were just contractual obligations. the former is just an
expansion on the story of V, however the latter apparently has a different ending to the Decalogue series
version, so i might consider watching it separately.

Earth is what I feel for you.this film is an incredible showcase of the deconstruction of humanity in its essence. it tears apart every familiar aspect of life and builds it back up with nothing. given the possibility of a world without precedent, yet every gesture repeats the old patterns, as though history itself is encoded in blood. from the birth of a religion conjured around memories of Earth, to the institution that swallows it whole. war, the only language humanity remembers firmly, first imagined as necessity, then as destiny. hierarchies rising, and the inevitable desire to destroy them. even love is shown not as salvation but as structure, bound within ritual, desire hardened into myth. the actions and lives of the astronauts manifest the impossibility of beginning again. everything destructive about humanity, the things we swear we would wipe away if only given another chance, persist. there is no new genesis, only repetition in different skies. to walk on another world is still to carry the ruins of this one.

JLG/JLG: Self-Portrait in December (1994)

If JLG by JLG exists, what does this by JLG mean?crushing, yet the kind of gesture one would expect of godard. serving as the dismantling of the self and its apotheosis, this film proves that to fall apart publicly is to construct a myth in the same instant. what survives is less the person that the fracture: a trace that endures precisely because it cannot be made whole again. have we even truly known godard? of course not. what we inherit is not godard, but the self-effacing portrait he endlessly revised, tens of drafts of his own perception, abstracting himself beyond (his own?) recognition. in the end, he will be forgotten. the he that once existed in truth will fade away, but the myth he composed will endure, outlasting time, more real in memory than he ever was in life.
